Important Handouts & Updates
Details from our Monday Team Meetings held in February are posted here.
Dear John Marshall Speech Team Students,
Rotarians and friends of the Rotary Clubs of Rochester would like to spend the day with you at Cascade Meadows for the first Rotary Ethics Workshop. You have been identified by district faculty as a natural leader who would enjoy experiencing a day-long immersion in ethics and ethical behavior. The program, originally developed for MBA students by a renowned ethics professor from the University of St. Thomas, provides you an opportunity to learn valuable lessons about conflicts and challenges often experienced with ethical decision making. It will be an exciting day!
EVENT: Rotary Ethics Workshop
WHEN: Tuesday, February 7, 2017
LOCATION: Cascade Meadow Wetlands & Environmental Science Center, 2900 19th St NW, Rochester
TRANSPORTATION: Students are being asked to provide their own transportation.
PARKING: Please carpool if possible, as parking is limited at Cascade Meadow. You may park in designated spots or along the side of the road.
REGISTRATION & BREAKFAST: 7:20-7:40 a.m. Please be prompt.
LUNCH: 11:35 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Lunch will be provided. Please email any dietary restrictions to firstname.lastname@example.org ASAP.
PROGRAM CONCLUDES: 3:00 p.m.
If interested, please contact Jayne Gibson, the RPS Director of Curriculum and Instruction, at JAGIBSON@rochester.k12.mn.us. (Please connect with her ASAP, as this is short notice: also, let her know that you're a member of the JM Speech team.)
Oh, AND they are also looking to train table leaders. This training would be Monday evening (the 6th) and would really help you grow some of your speech skills (ahem...especially discussants...) and leadership skills.
(Sorry this is so last minute: this was just shared with me it; however, I am excited that they'ave extended this invitation to each of you even if it is at the last minute...)
Also, FYI, Emma Gran and Nikhil Marda are already going to be there, so you'll see familiar faces!
JM Speech Team Parents/Guardians,
We are hosting our home John Marshall Speech Team Meet on Saturday, February 11th! Our meet is the most attended and best organized in the State (well, that might be slight hyperbole, but it's close...). Our meet is free and open to the public and a great opportunity to watch the JM Speech Team in action.
Would you be willing to support your son/daughter by donating food (at least) and/or time?
We need to:
If you are willing/able to help out, please click here.
FYI: This is also our largest fundraiser, and monies raised at this help fund supplies, student entrance fees at each invitational, etc.
Thank you for considering,
John Marshall Speech Team
PowerPoints from our January Monday Meetings (should you miss one) are/will be posted below.
Also, remember that all fees are due by Friday the 13th!
Hey team, it's time to get the season started!
Our season begins with the following (all held in Coach Nieland's classroom):
Please complete the following items before the meetings noted above:
All dates for the season (as we know them thus far) are noted on the "Team Schedule" document linked below.
There are over 60 of you. Yet, Nieland only has 30 blue point sheets! The deadline to turn these in is MONDAY, April 25. Nieland needs to order awards ASAP. If I don't have your sheet, your award(s) will be based on the information she currently has for you. (BTW: If you find your yellow one, turn that in, too.)
Also, Olivia, Gaby, Emma, Anish, Micaela, Tara, and Hodman -- you all need to please pick up your t-shirts and a treat from Coach Ashley ASAP. These are in Nieland's room. She really would like to take this off of her To Do List!
Awards Night is Monday, May 9th! You don't have school that day, but we still have our Awards Night at 7:00 p.m. in the Cafeteria that day. Please tell your family and friends now so they can get it on their calendars. Remember to bring a dozen cookies or bars (beverages will be provided). We're all looking forward to seeing you then!
If you're looking for a SUMMER CAMP or ONLINE WORKSHOP to help hone your Speaking Skills, here are some options to consider, brought to you by SPEAK2compete (the two owners used to run the Gustavus Speech Camp). Maybe some of you would be interested in going together?
Also, of you register by May 1st, there are some coupon codes available that I picked up at the State Tournament--they are included below, too.
SPEAK2compete incorporates education with confidence training designed to help speakers “win” everyday. Through innovative methods of individual coaching and instruction in a camp setting you will SPEAK2compete. Winning is a mindset, and through honing your public speaking and performance skills you will SPEAK2compete in speech competitions and most importantly, in life. Approximately 1/2 of the medal winners at the 2016 Minnesota State Tournament participated in a SPEAK2compete summer camp/workshop, or were coached by a member of the SPEAK2compete summer staff.
SPEAK2compete is excited to offer the following 2016 Summer Speech Intensive Experience at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota:
10-12th grade, July 16-23 (1 year of competitive experience required)
-- Commuter: $710.00
-- Residential (staying on site): $1,010.00
Register for the 2016 Summer Speech Intensive at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota by following this link: http://www.speak2compete.com/registerforssi/
(Enter: STATE100 at checkout for $100 off of your Summer Speech Intensive registration rate. This scholarship code will expire at 11:59pm on MAY 1st. Only one coupon is valid per transaction.)
SPEAK2compete is also excited to offer a 3-day camp at South Dakota State University on June 22-24, 2016 for students entering grades 7-12. Register for this camp by following this link: http://www.speak2compete.com/sseregistration/
-- Commuter: $285.00
-- Residential (staying on site): $360.00
(Enter: STATE50 at checkout for $50 off of your registration rate for the South Dakota State University Summer Speech Experience. This scholarship code will expire at 11:59pm on MAY 1st. Only one coupon is valid per transaction.)
A NOTE FROM COACH TOM: this SDSU camp will likely use the South Dakota state league rules, which will have some differences. You'll still learn good stuff, but just take a look at the SD rules first so you're aware of any differences.
SPEAK2compete is also offering some online Bootcamp workshops.
POI (Program Oral Interp) Bootcamp, May 16- May 20
-- Single: $150
-- Group: $350
A Week of Motivation, May 23-27
-- Single: $100
-- Group: $200
For more information about our online Bootcamps, and to register (MAY 1st registration deadline), go to: http://www.speak2compete.com/bootcamps2/
A NOTE FROM COACH TOM: POI isn't an event we have in MN high school speech, but it will help you learn some pretty advanced stuff about characterization, cutting, scene changes, and blending pieces. Also it's a nice sneak peek at college interp. for those considering a college forensics career.
If you miss a March Monday Meeting, all PowerPoints and handouts from those meetings are posted here:
